MARY ANN

The NAME
MARY ANN
The big boy on the right is a dual setup with my Perfection bracket, two Metz 45’s, and a power controller with 3800 dual 9.6 volt batteries in NIMH in tandem for the two ports on the pack

It is powerful and allows many modes for bounce flash, single or dual wide flash, 110 degree super wide coverage for Weddings and events.  I use Mary Ann with an umbrella, low settings for portraits, and the second head a bounce for background.  Few other units on the market can do this.   About a 10th, the price of the Profoto and similar rigs...

OK, my sense of humor sometimes runs away from me. I call her Mary Ann.  She works all day, all night, and now Mary Ann, down by the seaside sifting sand...as the song goes.  And she works down by the seaside...

BEACH PHOTOGRAPHY
Mounted on one of my sand poles ( see DIY section) she shoots great shots on back-lighted beach settings, and sundown work with large groups such as beach weddings and corporate cookouts popular here in Florida.  And they all want shots with the skyline lit on the background after the sun goes down.

No problem, thats if they are all standing and not passed out from alcohol.  When the wedding parties are six to ten per side and you really need wide coverage, I simple move each head 10 degrees off center.  At weddings or events I also use it in one head bounce, one head direct with diffusion, cool results and again one Metz is powerful, two is incredible. Thats a guide of about 300G hit on max.  I can build you one with the same setup you see for 250  to 400.00 depending on what you have in controllers, batteries, transmitters, receivers,  etc.

THE SAND SPEAR
To use on the beach, I made a variant of the Monopoly using a slightly larger stronger outdoor galvanized conduit three feet long with the bottom end cut like a spear 18” long cut at 25 degrees . The monopole slides into it.  I drilled several holes so it drains quick.  I made four from a twelve foot piece.   Beach weddings...duh.

I use it for beach weddings, backyard parties for kids and adults. Just stab it where you want.  Makes a hell of a walking stick and a great weapon. Just make sure where you stab doesn’t have a buried body or electrical lines. No pics since this might be construed as a Medieval weapon known as the “Spear”.

If you are mechanically declined and the thought of hacksawing conduit freezes you in your steps here is the economy model thanks to our friends who fish off the seashore.

If your paint pole is thicker, just take some PVC cement, cut off the flare at the top and add an extension with an extender one size up coupler.  Home depot has all the parts you could ever want

Bright Beach Scenes, I endorse the use of a twenty-five or thirty foot Plain Jane PC Cord from Zebra Flash to connect the camera to the flash on a stick.

Why? Simple when shooting beach shots or into the sun most cameras will not synch on second curtain or high mode at the speeds necessary for the bright light or back lighting even with Pocket Wizards where some models can’t do high synch.

They will however work with a direct PC connection since the flash is now only a few feet from the subject and the flash is at its brightest.  70-200 lens, tripod or monopod and you got those high end shot outfits like PROFOTO and others ran slick ads and thousands of dollars for.  I call this technique Econo-Slick-Schtick and it works.

YEARS BACK - SLOW FILM
I was cutting some ad media at night of vehicles using time exposures, a pile of strobes and a boards with nails on it for tripping the flashes with an open shutter.  This year I will do the shot with Mary Ann and YO, Mann a similar rig made with two METZ 76’s.  250 at ISO 100 x TWO...

The kit in the picture finished includes Two MetzCT-1’s, one perfection bracket, Two Yong-Nuo receivers, One transmitter, a backup transmitter, One 9.6  4000 mah power pack custom cables, end of the year price 375.00 plus shipping good till DEC-15, only one per customer at this price, it’s called a loss leader.  Does not include light stand. Other power options available and we can use your strobes and save you money.
